English 2089 was an honors English course that I had the privilege of taking this semester. I have always enjoyed writing, but have not been taken a course involving writing papers since high school. This course gave me the opportunity to compose several papers on very intriguing topics. In one of my favorite papers we wrote, we were instructed to research a community of our choice. I decided to learn about the blue collar community, a group that my grandpa has been involved with for decades. Throughout the drafting of this essay, I got to spend a lot of quality time with my grandpa, learning about his experiences with the blue collar community throughout his life. I got to learn a lot more about him as a person and also gained a lot of knowledge of the community as well.
Another paper that we wrote really challenged me to look at myself. The topic of the paper was to look at yourself as a reader and writer, and to analyze big moments that characterize your reading and writing. While writing this paper, I noticed that my quantity of reading for leisure has dropped significantly since high school. The stress of schoolwork combined with less free time pushed out reading as one of my hobbies. This realization urged me to start reading again as a hobby. I read a lot as a kid, and some of my favorite memories on vacations and road trips are from books I read while on them. This paper taught me a lot about myself, and allowed me to get back into reading for leisure.
Overall, this course pushed me to expand my writing skills, and to learn more about myself as a reader and writer. I was challenged to write about topics that I was unfamiliar with, and to use personal interviews in my writing, something that I had never done before. I was pushed to use a lot of creativity in my writing, and to write about topics that bettered me as a student and as a person.
