My first year of college has been the most important and interesting year of my life. I grew and matured in many different areas, and very happy with how I have changed in this year. I made a lot of new friends, which was a concern for me as I came from a high school class of 150. My roommates for next year consist of mostly guys that I did not know from high school which is exciting and shows me that I am doing well in that aspect.
The year started off with me working for the first time outside of the restaurant industry. I became a patient transporter at Christ Hospital in September, which was an awesome opportunity as I could walk from school to work. The job was a great experience and I learned a lot about the medical field, and became better at communication, thinking on my feet, and working in a team. I made a lot of friends who were older than me which allowed me to acquire a lot of helpful advice and tips about college and the future in general.
During the end of first semester, I started to reap the benefits of honors program. I was in Gateway to Honors as all freshmen in honors are and the class had a major impact on me. I learned a lot about myself as a person and what my distinct personality traits are. I found out what the honors program can do for me and how I can best use it to diversify my college experience. During the end of the class, I was told about the Protégé program. In this program, a student is paired with a faculty member for a summer and they work on a project together. I applied for the program and after several interviews was accepted for a position at General Electric. I was supposed to be working on the project right now, but unfortunately the project was cancelled due to COVID-19. However, this experience did benefit me in the end. GE ended up offering me a four week program that will allow me to get experience in a professional environment and learn more about the company, and I gained a lot of valuable interview experience.
For my second year, I want to set more concrete goals and work hard towards them. Personally, I want to learn how to cook more meals and eat a healthier diet, as this is my first year living on my own without a meal plan and eating healthier will benefit me in many ways. I want to set a goal of a certain GPA, but the more I think about that, the more superficial it sounds. Instead I want to fall more in love with my interests and pursue them. I want to become better at coding, work on bigger and more complicated projects, and truly understand the information presented to me in my classes. I hope to work at GE or if not, a similar company in the spring. This would have been the current plan if not for COVID-19, and I hope I can work my way back to having that opportunity. I also want to work on exploring my interests more through honors experiences. I am already enrolled in an honors seminar for next semester that focusses on the history and implications of bitcoin, and I am very excited for it. I hope for my next honors experience to involve travelling or research of some sort as I love both of those activities.
